Before starting university, I would have never thought about joining case competitions because I lacked confidence in oral presentations. It was not until my first networking event that I realized that maybe I should try something new and take a chance on competing, after all, this opportunity could help my presentation skills. Once I started trainings and meeting many new students, I realized that there was no way I would miss out on future case competitions.

Since the start of university, I have participated in the following case competitions:

  • DECA uOttawa Year End Competition 2016
  • DECAU Ontario Provincials 2016
  • Telfer Internal Case Competition 2015
  • DECA uOttawa Internals 2015
  • DECA uOttawa Year End Competition 2015
  • Telfer International Case Competition 2015
  • DECAU Ontario Provincials 2015
  • Telfer Marketing Association Challenge 2014
  • DECA uOttawa Internals 2014

From the case competitions listed, the following list my competition accomplishments:

  • First place for Best Presentation at DECA uOttawa Year End Event 2016
  • First place Telfer International Case Competition 2015
  • First place for Marketing Management at DECA uOttawa Internals 2014
  • Scored 96% for Marketing Management at DECAU Ontario Provincials 2016, a competition where delegates compete amongst hundreds of student from 19 other universities within Ontario

Overall, case competitions have allowed me to further develop‍‍‍ myself personally and professionally. Not only have case competitions forced me to be open to new challenges, but they have also improved my confidence, my ability to work under pressure, and allowed me to expand my network of connections.

It isn't university without some involvement in school associations!

Telfer International‍‍‍

In second year, I became a mentor for the Telfer School of Management's International Mentorship Program. I got the opportunity to plan and organize events with other mentors for the incoming exchange students. During my time as a mentor, I was fortunate enough to have met many students from all over the world and learn about the many different cultures, some of them even changed my decision on where I wanted to go for exchange – I ended up going to Hong Kong.

‍‍‍If I had the money and chance to participate in another exchange, you would see me signing up without a second of doubt. The overall experience was life changing and that made me want to come back to Telfer International as their Vice President of Events. As their VP Events, I got the opportunity to work alongside the executive team to organize networking and social events fo not only the incoming exchange students, but also the outbound exchange students and other uOttawa students.

This year, Telfer International hosted the very first Student Talks event in North America and it was a great success with over 100 attendees! The goal of Student Talks is to give students a voice to share their experiences and to inspire others. Be sure to check out Student Talk's website to find out more about what they do.

Overall, my experience with Telfer International has made me more experienced in event planning, strengthened my leadership skills, and improved my communication skills.
